We put out announcements at the beginning of this week related to opportunities to work with the Media Policy Initiative as either as a part-time fellow or as an intern. As we are receiving questions from potential applicants I wanted to write a short blog post to address the most common ones.

[NOTE: We are no longer accepting applications for Part-time fellows]

1. Range of backgrounds

The work is centered around the recently issued Knight Report, Informing Communities: Sustaining Democracy in a Digital Age, which raises questions around media, participation, technology, higher education, media literacy and other areas. The breadth of the breadth of the report means that we are keen to receive applications from the broadest spectrum of people possible. Specifically, we are most interested in those who would complement the knowledge and skills of those already engaged in the project from New America and the Open Technology Initiative. In short, if you think you would bring a novel perspective to the team please submit an application and explain in the cover letter what it is.

2. Location of Fellows

The part-time fellowships are non-residential and we welcome applications from across the United States. Occasional travel to Washington, DC will be required.

3. Focus of Work

As a public policy institute New America invests in new thinkers and new ideas to address the next generation of challenges facing the United States. This work seeks to be relevant to the policy debates ongoing at both the federal and state level.

I will also add that even though we have only a small number of fellowships available we are also seeking to engage as many people as possible on an informal basis, so even if you are not sure your profile or availability fits that of a typical fellow please do send in a resume and cover letter. We are keen to learn of anyone interested in the subject.
